Drug De-addiction center attached to Department of Psychiatry
Services provided in Deaddiction center:
1. Outpatient Facilities: Drug Deaddiction clinic is being run weekly once in the afternoon of every Thursday for drug addicts from 2 pm to 4 pm. Apart from that, drug addicts are also seen in daily OPDs for general psychiatric patients to reduce the load from weekly Deaddiction clinic as well as providing better facilities to them
2. In-patient facilities: A 30-bedded de-addiction center is attached to the general psychiatry ward for admission and Deaddiction of drug dependence patients.
3. Accident and emergency services: A 24-hour A/E is being run to cater for the acutely mentally ill as well as acute drug withdrawal, intoxication and addicts in delirium. They are evaluated and managed in emergency.
4. Drug Dispensing: Various drugs specific to various types of drug dependence are provided to the addicted patients freely by the department. Maintenance therapy with agonists such as buprenorphine and spasmo-proxyvon are provided to the opioid addicts who form a major chunk of drug addicts in the population.
5. Occupational therapy: A full time occupational therapist is posted in the drug Deaddiction center to provide services to the addicts.
6. Relapse prevention: A multi-disciplinary team consisting of psychiatrist, mental health nurse, occupational therapist, and resident doctors provide various relapse prevention services such as group therapy, counseling, Gardening (in association with the horticulture department), Cue-reactivity procedures, which are vital in maintaining the abstinence.
7. Psychotherapy and Social worker services: These important services are temporarily non-functional because of lack of man-power (posts vacant, yet to be fulfilled after the retirement), which however can be restarted immediately once the posts are filled. In the meantime the department tries to provide such facilities with the help of interns (psychology) posted in the department from other universities such as Delhi University.
